Servers vs. Returners on the ATP Tour

The two halves of elite tennis — and the one player who has both

What This Page is About

Tennis is two separate games. Half the time you are holding your own serve; the other half you are trying to break someone else's. The ATP tracks these as two entirely different leaderboards, with their own ratings and their own top tens — and almost nobody appears on both.

This page puts the serve top 10 and the return top 10 side by side so you can see who is good at which half, and what actually separates the players inside each list. Click any name and the page will find that player in both tables, pull their key numbers, and tell you what kind of player they are.

What You Can Use It For

  • Scouting a matchup: find out whether a match will be decided on serve or on return before you watch it
  • Reading a player: see the shape of someone's game in four numbers instead of a highlight reel
  • Stat literacy: learn which columns predict a player's rating and which ones are just the numbers that make television
  • Finding the complete players: identify who wins points on both sides of the ball, and how rare that is
